About The Association of American Medical Colleges
The Association of American Medical Colleges is a DC based nonprofit association representing the nation's medical schools, teaching hospitals, faculty and students whose mission is to improve the nation's health by enhancing the effectiveness of academic medicine. The AAMC's full-time staff of 400 is divided into several offices and divisions, each with a specific focus area. The AAMC offers competitive salaries combined with generous employee benefits, and fosters an environment where continuous development is encouraged and individual differences are respected and embraced.

The AAMC’s constituent groups consist of medical schools, teaching hospitals, faculty, residents and students. We represent:

  • the 125 accredited U.S. medical schools
  • the 17 accredited Canadian medical schools
  • nearly 400 major teaching hospitals, including 98 affiliated health
  • systems and 68 Veterans Affairs medical centers
  • 96 academic and professional societies, representing 109,000 faculty members
  • the nation's 67,000 medical students and 104,000 residents

We support our constituents through a broad array of programs and studies:

  • We work with our members to set a national agenda for medical education, biomedical research, and health care.
  • We provide services at the national level that help our members accomplish their missions.
  • We strive to strengthen the quality of medical education and training, to enhance the search for biomedical knowledge, to advance research in health sciences, and to integrate education into the provision of effective health care.

The administrative leadership of medical schools and teaching hospitals are served by a variety of professional development groups housed within the AAMC.

We serve as a resource for those entering the medical field, through various services which include the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS), the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), MEDLOANS, and the National Resident Matching Service.

    AAMC's Employee Benefits
The AAMC strives to provide the most equitable and cost-effective benefits for its employees in recognition of the influence benefits have on the economic and personal welfare of each individual. The total cost to provide the benefit program described below is a significant supplement to each staff member's salary, and should therefore be viewed as additional compensation, paid in various forms, on behalf of each AAMC staff member. Highlights of the AAMC benefit options inclde:

  • Health insurance-The AAMC offers two HMOs, a PPO Plan and a Network Only Plan from which to choose medical insurance. Separate dental and vision plans are also available. The AAMC pays the entire cost of an individual'’s premium to an AAMC sponsored medical and dental plan, and currently contributes $516.00 toward the monthly of dependents' coverage through any AAMC sponsored plan. Domestic partners are eligible to participate.

  • Education benefits-As a supporter of higher education, the AAMC will reimburse staff members for courses which are useful to a staff member's employment with the AAMC, or for courses that lead to a staff member's degree program. AAMC reimburses for 85% of tuition up to $5,250 per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30).

  • Retirement benefits-Staff members may begin contributing to AAMC's tax-deferred 403(b) retirement benefit plan through payroll deduction immediately upon employment. Staff who have completed on year of service with the Association are eligible to receive an employer contribution to the plan. This one-year period is waived if the staff member's most recent employer was another nonprofit (including government agencies) and the staff member was eligible for that employer's retirement plan. The base employer contribution is 8% of gross salary. Alternatively, AAMC makes a 10% contribution to the plan if the staff member contributes at least 2% of salary to the plan via payroll deductions.

  • Employee leave-AAMC general staff members accrue 15 days per year of annual leave time and up to 12 days per year of sick leave.

  • Flexible spending accouts-The AAMC provides a Flexible Spending Account Program (FSA)which allows staff to set aside money on a pre-tax basis to pay for medical expenses, dependent care expenses or privately held health or disability premiums. Income directed into these accounts is not subjected to federal, state, Social Security or Medicare taxes. The maximum annual contribution is $5,000 per year, per account.
